Is blogging redundant?
Holy crap. It's been forever since I've actually gotten around to writing anything here. I think Twitter is occupying my writing mind and my frequent, random, and sometimes senseless updates there are causing me to strain to find anything that is worth writing about here. I think Twitter has totally changed the blogging game, making it seems fairly redundant if you're a frequent Twitter updater (Twitterer?).
I love Twitter. I've been using it since April 25th, 2007 and have been mostly loving it. For me, it started out as a way to share the excitement of BlizzCon 2007 with my friends and the world, and I got some great responses from it! I was contacted by some press to publish photos I took, and received emails and replies on Twitter thanking me for my coverage. It was tons of fun. I did the same thing at BlizzCon 2008, but am sad to say that I was unable to get tickets to BlizzCon 2009 to do the same. I don't really know if anyone read mine from last year, but I don't really care a whole lot. The posts were mostly for my own reference and enjoyment.
My biggest problem with Twitter is that it keeps me from blogging. I do really like blogging, but it feels really redundant to me to post about how I'm feeling, what I'm thinking, or what I want to share with people on Twitter and then just do it again here. Everything seems to get flushed from my head and out onto the web through Twitter, not getting filtered anywhere down the line. Blogging allows me to better refine my thoughts, make them more appropriate, and expand into other topics related to what I'm writing about.
Maybe not having a filter is a good thing. I kind of like just quickly posting whatever and not having to invest much effort into it. Blogging takes time and effort and is probably forcing me to write more than is actually needed for whatever I'm writing about. I tend to "overwrite" when I blog, as you can probably tell from this and prior posts. Twitter forces me to keep things simple, yet descriptive and I think that it's actually helping me become a better writer.
I don't know what this means for me and for my blogging. As I continue to use Twitter to share what I'm thinking, the need to blog seems to be slipping away and I continue to think about blogging less and less. I'd like to keep blogging and think that I'll try harder than I have been lately. I just celebrated my first wedding anniversary with my wife at Hotel del Coronado, and I've been itching to write more about it than what I've Tweeted so far.
I guess I'll just have to see how, where, and if things go.
