DreamHost hates the environment?
Everyone knows that Josh Jones hates the environment. He does everything he can to make sure that DreamHost has the greatest environmental impact of all the web hosting companies on the planet. Actually, I'm just kidding. While Josh does try to make DreamHost have the greatest environmental impact of all other hosting companies, he's trying to do it in a good way.
Did you know that DreamHost is a green web host? It's done through carbon neutralization. That means that carbon offset credits are purchased to offset every bit of carbon produced by the company. There's debate as to whether these actually mean anything, so Dallas spent a lot of time making sure that the company we purchase our credits through is reputable and invests the money in good, green causes.
DreamHost (and Josh's disgust for a healthy environment) doesn't stop there. There's a lot more going on behind the scenes that a lot of people didn't know about, until now. Over the past few weeks, different servers are going through hardware upgrades that are designed to make them run more faster, more reliably, and be more energy efficient. Not only does this do a lot to help the environment, it's a great cost-cutting option during tough national economic times and will ultimately be something that will make the customer's hosting experience much more pleasurable. Unfortunately the process hasn't been entirely painless.
There have been some issues with the upgrades, as there always seems to be. We're really trying our best to make sure that stuff like this doesn't happen, but I'm pretty sure that technology enjoys making this difficult. Many of these issues (downtime notwithstanding) that could have been prevented by the customer, but that still doesn't make it their fault. Changes were made to the way things work and that caused sites to break, websites to be down, and customers to be angry. That's no good.
DreamHost really does love the environment and the customers, too! Imitation is the highest form of flattery, you know, so why not spend 18 seconds to make the world a little greener? There's a lot more you can do, and it's fun! You'd be surprised at the number of green alternatives for things that you do every day without considering the environmental impact. Even coffee and tea have green alternatives. Every little bit helps. Your favorite web host is green. Shouldn't you be, too?
