Dumping the iPhone
I'm done. I'm tired of dealing with issues arising from my iPhone and I'm just fed up with not having a phone that "just works." I used to believe that Apple cared about making quality hardware, but my experiences with the iPhone 3G have led me to believe otherwise. I have never used a more buggy, crashy, and wholly unreliable electronic device than an iPhone 3G and I'm just fed up.
Since the new iPhone came out, there's been nothing but trouble with it. The activation process was down for hours and I was left with a $200 iBrick for most of the day. Didn't activation problems plague the original iPhone and wouldn't you have expected Apple to do something to prevent it with the launch of their new device? I guess that didn't cross their mind. Once activated, I found that the battery life was significantly less than the previous generation and it crashed and rebooted a lot more, too. A great introduction.
Within a few months things seemed to improve. Updates fixed most of my complaints, but things like Mail, Safari, and 3rd party applications continued to crash every so often and battery life was only marginally improved. I decided to buy myself MobileMe for Christmas, which proved to be a mistake. I used it for a few weeks before giving up. The server was slow, unreliable, and drained the battery way more than an Exchange account ever did. There's another $50 wasted. Thanks Apple.
More recently, battery issues have been my biggest complaint. I replaced my original iPhone just to get one with a screen issue. I replaced that one just to get this one that has intermittent battery issues. There's some days where it will be dead by the end of the day with only 30 minutes usage logged, and I had fully charged it and unplugged it that morning. Other times I'll get 2+ days of standby and 2+ hours of usage on the same charge.
I just don't care anymore. The iPhone is a piece of trash in my eyes. It's literally the most unreliable phone that I have ever used and I've used a ton of different phones. Even the dreaded Windows Mobile offers reliability that I wish my iPhone could have. I give up on Apple, the iPhone, and especially the hype of everything the release. I will never buy another Apple product. There was a time that I seriously considered and wanted to get a Mac. I now realize that I was just caught up in the hype as I was with the iPhone and I regret that. I regret putting my trust in Apple and thinking that their hardware was actually different from the competition. I now realize that it is not.
Unfortunately I'm stuck with my iPhone right now. There's not another device on AT&T that I really like. The BlackBerry Bold looks like a nice phone, and I'd like to have it but it's just not worth the $550 retail price that I'd have to pay for it, since I can't get an upgrade discount. I'm almost tempted to just buy an oldschool phone for a couple of hundred dollars and just be done with it. Do I really need mobile web? Do I need to check my email anywhere I am? Do I need all of the applications that I've wasted money on from the App Store that turn out to be unreliable, and forgotten by the developers? No, I don't... Apple made me think that I did and they made me get used to the convenience but I'm starting to think that I could save $30 a month on a data plan by going back to a basic phone and forgetting it all.
I wish AT&T had a nice Android phone. No, I wish they had any Android phone. If they did, I would get it in a heartbeat and sell this iPhone for whatever I could get for it. It's pretty new since I replaced it at the Apple Store maybe a month or so ago. Whatever I get for it is enough, and I'd probably even pay someone to get away from the annoyance. They're going quite nicely on eBay, but do I really want to go through the hassle of switching providers again or should I just live with the annoyance, frustration, and disappointment with the iPhone? Probably the latter.
